Why Dutch Travellers Visit India
Why German Travellers Choose India
Roots & Heritage
About 200,000 Dutch citizens of Indo-Surinamese (Hindustani) origin have ancestral ties to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and surrounding regions of northern India. For many, visiting India is a deeply personal journey to discover the land their forefathers left in the 19th century. The e-Tourist Visa covers all VFR (visiting friends and relatives) and heritage travel.
Culture & Tourism
Dutch travellers are drawn to the Taj Mahal, Rajasthan's forts and deserts, Kerala's backwaters, Goa's beaches, and Varanasi's ancient ghats. The Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur) remains the most popular first-time route. India's affordability and cultural depth make it a favourite among Dutch independent travellers and backpackers alike.
Business & Trade
The Netherlands is India's largest merchandise trading partner in the EU, with bilateral trade exceeding USD 27 billion annually. Dutch companies including Philips, Unilever, Shell, ASML, and Heineken maintain significant Indian operations. The e-Business Visa covers trade fairs, meetings, factory visits, and conferences with multi-entry access.
Simple Process
How It Works
Three straightforward steps from form to eVisa
Fill Your Form
Our form is optimised for Dutch passport holders. We auto-detect your nationality and pre-fill relevant fields. The entire form is in English, which is widely spoken in the Netherlands. Group applications are supported for up to 10 travellers, ideal for families or business delegations.
Upload Documents
Upload your Dutch passport bio page and a recent photo. Dutch passport photos follow the Schengen standard (35mm x 45mm, rectangular), but India requires 51mm x 51mm (2x2 inches, square format). Upload any photo you have and our team handles the resizing and formatting to India's exact specifications.
Expert Review & Receive Visa
A visa specialist checks every detail, including ensuring your name matches your Dutch passport exactly. Dutch names with prefixes (van, de, van der) are handled correctly. Your eVisa is delivered by email and works at all 32 designated airports, 6 seaports, and 2 land border crossings across India.

Unique Connection
The Indo-Surinamese Heritage
A uniquely Dutch connection to India through Suriname
🌎 The Hindustani-Surinamese Story
Between 1873 and 1916, over 34,000 Indians migrated to Suriname as indentured labourers, mostly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Their descendants, known as Hindustani-Surinamese, migrated to the Netherlands after Suriname's independence in 1975 and following the 1980 military coup.
Today, approximately 200,000 Indo-Surinamese Dutch citizens maintain cultural connections to India. Many speak Sarnami Hindustani, a blend of Bhojpuri and Awadhi, and practise Hinduism (78%), Islam (13%), or Christianity (7%). For this community, visiting India is a return to the ancestral homeland their great-grandparents left over a century ago.
🏭 Netherlands-India Trade
The Netherlands is India's largest merchandise trading partner in the EU, with bilateral trade exceeding USD 27 billion in 2023-24. The relationship spans technology, agriculture, water management, and renewable energy.
Major Dutch companies in India include Philips (healthcare technology, with a large Bengaluru campus), Unilever (Hindustan Unilever is India's largest FMCG company), Shell, ASML, Heineken (through United Breweries), and Rabobank. The Indo-Dutch business corridor generates significant e-Business Visa demand for trade fairs, factory visits, and board meetings.
Insider Tips
India Travel Tips for Dutch Travellers
✈️ Getting There
KLM flies direct from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Delhi (8h), Mumbai (8h30), Bengaluru (9h45), and Hyderabad (launched September 2025, 3x weekly). Air India also operates nonstop Amsterdam-Delhi services. Amsterdam Schiphol is a major European hub, making connections seamless from across the Netherlands. Emirates via Dubai and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul are popular connecting options for additional Indian cities.
💳 Money & Payments
India uses Indian Rupee (INR). 1 EUR equals approximately 93-97 INR. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas. Carry cash for local markets, auto-rickshaws, and rural areas. Dutch debit cards (Maestro) often work at Indian ATMs. iDEAL is not available in India, so ensure you have an international Visa or Mastercard for online transactions.
🏥 Health & Insurance
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/EVB) does NOT cover you in India. Private travel insurance (reisverzekering) is essential. Check the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (rijksoverheid.nl) for the latest India travel advisory. No mandatory vaccinations, but the RIVM and GGD recommend Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Ensure routine vaccinations are current before departure.
🌡️ When to Go
October to March is peak season with cooler, dry weather across most of India. This aligns with Dutch autumn and winter, making India a popular warm-weather escape. Avoid April to June (extreme heat above 40 C). Monsoon (July-September) brings lush landscapes and lower prices. Dutch school holidays (meivakantie, zomervakantie) can affect flight pricing. Book early for herfstvakantie and kerstvakantie travel.
What Dutch Travelers Say
“I usually handle travel documents myself, so I didn’t initially plan to use any service. But applying for India from Amsterdam felt a bit different compared to traveling within Europe as there are more details to get right than expected. I went with visain just to be sure everything was correct. They reviewed my application and my visa came through in a few days. It was a practical decision in the end.”

“From Rotterdam, I was planning a short trip to Mumbai. The process itself is online, but I didn’t want to spend time figuring out every requirement. What I liked about visain was how straightforward it felt- upload, review, done. No unnecessary steps. I received my visa within the expected timeframe and didn’t have to follow up at any point. Very efficient overall.”

“My partner and I were planning a stay at an Ayurveda resort in Kerala. We tried the official route first, but our Dutch credit cards kept being rejected by the payment gateway. We switched to visain, and the payment went through instantly. They kept us updated at every step. We received both our visas together within two days. It’s well worth the fee to avoid the technical glitches of the standard portal.”

Q&A
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. All Dutch passport holders need a visa to enter India. There is no visa-free arrangement between the Netherlands and India. However, Dutch citizens are fully eligible for India's eVisa programme, which means you can apply entirely online without visiting the Indian Embassy in The Hague. The eVisa is electronically linked to your passport number. Print the approval email and present it at immigration on arrival.
Dutch citizens can stay up to 90 days per visit on the e-Tourist Visa (1-year and 5-year options). The 30-day e-Tourist Visa allows a maximum of 30 days with double entry. Note that the 180-day extended stay provision only applies to nationals of the USA, UK, Canada, and Japan. Dutch nationals are subject to the standard 90-day limit. For longer stays, apply for a regular visa through the Indian Embassy in The Hague.
We offer three processing speeds: Express (48 hours), Priority (72 hours), and Standard (96 hours). All times are from receipt of a complete application. India is 4.5 hours ahead of CET (3.5 hours ahead during CEST summer time). For the fastest results, apply in the afternoon Dutch time, which corresponds to late Indian business hours.
No. Dutch passport photos follow the Schengen standard of 35mm x 45mm (rectangular), but India requires 51mm x 51mm (square, equivalent to 2x2 inches). If you submit a Dutch passport photo without resizing, it will be rejected. With VisaIn.in, upload any photo and our team will resize and format it to India's exact specifications. No need to get new photos from a fotokiosk.
This is a common concern for Dutch applicants. Dutch names with prefixes such as "van", "de", "van der", or "van den" are handled correctly by our system. Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport, including any tussenvoegsels (name particles). Our visa specialist team reviews every application and verifies that name fields are consistent with your travel document before submission. The key rule: match your passport exactly.
Yes, if you hold a Dutch passport. All Dutch passport holders, regardless of ethnic background, need a visa to enter India. India does not offer a visa exemption or OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card for Indo-Surinamese Dutch citizens, as the ancestral migration predates India's independence. You are fully eligible for the eVisa programme and can apply online in 5 minutes. The e-Tourist Visa covers heritage visits, family trips, and pilgrimage travel to ancestral regions in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and elsewhere.
Mostly yes. India uses Type C, Type D, and Type M sockets. The standard European two-pin Europlug (Type C) fits into most Indian sockets without an adaptor. However, if you use a Schuko plug (Type F, with grounding clips on the sides), it will not fit securely in Indian sockets and needs an adaptor. Most modern Dutch electronics use Type C or come with detachable cables. India uses 220-230V at 50Hz, very similar to the Netherlands (230V/50Hz), so no voltage converter is needed.
Refusal Protection is an optional paid add-on available at checkout. If your visa application is refused by the Indian government, this add-on refunds your service fee. It protects against the rare event of an unexpected visa denial and provides peace of mind, especially for first-time applicants.
Yes. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flies direct from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Delhi (approximately 8 hours), Mumbai (approximately 8 hours 30 minutes), Bengaluru (approximately 9 hours 45 minutes), and Hyderabad (launched September 2025, 3x weekly). Air India also operates nonstop Amsterdam-Delhi services. For connecting flights, Emirates via Dubai and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul offer competitive fares to dozens of Indian cities beyond the KLM network. Passenger numbers between Amsterdam and India have nearly doubled in recent years.
No. The European Health Insurance Card (Europese verzekeringskaart/EVB) only provides coverage within the European Economic Area and Switzerland. It offers no coverage in India. You need separate private travel insurance (reisverzekering) for any trip to India. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation, as healthcare facilities in rural India may require transfer to a major city. Check rijksoverheid.nl for the latest India travel advisory before departure.
Yes. VisaIn.in supports group applications for up to 10 travellers in a single booking. Each traveller needs their own passport and photo, but you can manage all applications from one account and pay together. This is especially convenient for families making heritage trips to India or business delegations. Each person receives their own individual eVisa linked to their passport number.
